Whilst in our 3rd year, I was heavily procrastinating on Facebook and Twitter, don’t know if you’ve heard of them? I came across a competition AIS were running through Twitter; their 1000th follower would receive an hour with Steve Stretton and Matt Morley-Brown, Creative Partner and Creative Director respectively. Well the winner turned out to be Ollie so we went and met both Steve and Matt and hit it off instantly. We stayed in contact with them and after we’d finished at Dare we thought we’d go back to AIS and see if we could get a placement there. The rest, as they say, is history.

I must say, we love it here. We get to work on a mixture of briefs and with a great bunch of people. We’ve even turned out for the agency 5-a-side team B.O.B (stats fans Pollie are on 2 goals from 3 games). We’ve worked on digital campaigns, DM, stunts/ambient, advertorials, posters, iPhone apps, it’s been a steep learning curve but a lot of fun at the same time.

There are two things I judge a placement by, are we learning anything and are we getting any work out? At AIS, the answer to both is yes so hopefully we can stay here for as long as possible. We’ve also recently developed a healthy rivalry with digital Creative Director, Geoff Gower, on FIFA 10 (PS2), so there’s an ever so slightly more important reason to stay.
Pete + Olliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00869952071237839448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3599002802423327341.post-58464177526061438092010-07-31T11:26:00.000-07:002010-07-31T11:32:45.746-07:00The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth

I do it all the time. Over-analysing, over-thinking, over-working. When really, all you need is a good truth. Great advertising always engages with the audience and there’s no better way of doing that than to find a human insight. Something that is universally true and we all do, if you can pair that to a product with a simple idea then you can’t lose, why? Because it’s the truth, you can’t argue against it. In this context I’m talking about advertising but the same applies to other things.

Have you ever noticed that a lot of the best films, the ones that really strike a chord, are based on true stories? Or that the best comedians make you laugh by simply talking about things we all do day to day. It’s human, it’s real, and it’s believable.

I’m a big traditional advertising fan, there’s nothing I love more than a great poster campaign but whether you like it or not, times are changing and as we’re the next generation coming through we need to be thinking digitally. That doesn’t mean a fancy banner ad, or a fun iPhone app, it means a great idea executed digitally. It’s exactly the same as above the line advertising, an insight, a strategy, an idea, all these things are needed. If anything, we found digital to be more fun. Endless possibilities and the thing I found the most intriguing was that with a good digital campaign, you can reach your target audience and get them to really engage with the brand you’re advertising rather than switching the channel or turning the page.

There seems to have been noticeable shifts in the approach the banks and their respective agencies have taken in representing themselves to the masses. The financial services sector is a typical low-interest category; people would rather think about which car they’re going to buy or where they’re going to go on holiday, not which ISA or savings account they should choose. Another point to note is that the differentiation between the services banks offer is very hard to pin point, services on offer are incredibly similar.

Essentially the products and services banks provide are more or less the same. Therefore the advertising and marketing of these brands is of massive importance hence the reason for so much change in their communications recently. Brands such as Halifax, Nationwide and Barclays have made massive changes to their advertising due to the recession. Big strategic and creative changes can be seen as an advantage but there is much to be said for brands that have stuck to their core message and brand values.

HSBC is famous for being a global brand. Their market positioning has been “The Worlds Local Bank” way before the recent recession and has continued to be after it. The recession has affected the whole world not jus the financial capitals of London and New York. HSBC have recognised this and have targeted everybody, rather than narrowing their target audience. By being consistent they portray an image of security and being an intelligent organization that doesn’t change its message every time something goes wrong economically. Although many firms have been communicating in the area of trust, HSBC has taken a different approach. While the notion of trust may relieve some internal pressures, and provide a short-term solution it won’t stand up as a long-term brand position. In addition, what’s more trustworthy than a bank that is consistently saying the same thing? Chopping and changing a core message suggests uncertainty. While others are floundering, if not failing, in this economic gloom, HSBC have stayed strong and by being consistent have not had to waste money on additional marketing and advertising. A very clever approach indeed.

Have you ever wondered why banks tend to have really traditional and expensive buildings? The reason is that the buildings are adverts in themselves. It states to the consumer “We’re here to stay. We’re not going to run off with your money”. It’s a mark of performance. The consumer can have confidence in the bank because they’ve obviously spent a lot of money and time on building a reputation. The banks have a lot to lose if they don’t follow through with their promises to consumers. As well as being the basis of a good brand, this idea of communicating to the consumer in a more subconscious way is called behavioural economics. Behavioural economics has a role in analysing the thought process of consumers in a recession, especially when their own money is at stake. In this current economic climate, consumers may be tempted to find short-term solutions to their money problems. Banks that have changed their advertising due to the recession can lure in consumers who are in search of a short-term solution. Consumers feel better if they react now rather than taking the better long-term solution. And this pursue of short-term gratification could be why some banks have decided to sell themselves as responding to the credit crunch.

This theory ties in with the advertising of banks. If the theory of loss aversion is applied then people will be anxious to prevent losing money and will therefore be more responsive to advertising that places an emphasis on safety and security.

There are arguments for both cases but banks can tackle the recession with a long-term solution, which can also benefit them in the future. So to some extent, the banks shouldn’t let the recession affect their advertising at all.

Halifax has produced a brand new TV advert (first appeared 17.01.10), which is dramatically more upbeat and light-hearted. Whether or not this is the correct decision and if others will follow, only time will tell. If banks do revert back to a more humorous approach, when is it appropriate to do so? Have Halifax been slightly premature? The fact that Halifax had comical adverts then more mature and are slowly heading back towards comical adverts is proof that the recession did have an affect on their advertising at least.

It’s unlikely that you will change your bank account very often, it’s one of only few products or services whereby your first choice is normally your last. Although now, because of the recession, people are starting to look into the different brands and offers more closely and consequently the advertising has had to address this issue. So, in conclusion, the recession has had an affect on the advertising of banks but over time we’ll then be able to see to what extent.

We turned up for the last half hour and managed to find a mildly (very) drunk Sean who was one of the first graduates from the Lincoln advertising course.
Right back to more pressing issues, Results have been and gone. Ollie and I both got a 2:1. Hold the applause. I’m livid. I was 0.2% away from a 1st. “We’ve got to draw the line somewhere”. Fuck your line, or move it back, I don’t care what you do but sort it out. I haven’t sacrificed 3 years (OK 2 years, 1st year was a massive piss-up) of my life and £18,000 for a slightly above average degree. You could say it doesn’t matter to employers in advertising, but to be honest with you, it matters to me. I’m a competitive person, and to be perfectly frank 2:1 is an epic fail. I’m sure many of you who are, or have been, at University have had people tell you that it’s a waste of time. Thousands of pounds of debt, a degree which in reality doesn’t mean all that much (because half the bloody country has one) and a beer belly is all you’ll have to show after 3 years. I have friends who didn’t go onto further education; they got a job in the city and are doing very well. They’ve got their own car, a place to live and have years of experience. I, on the other hand, still sleep in a bunk bed with my brother (I’ve got the bottom bunk in case you were wondering). University still sounds a bit shitty doesn’t it?

But I’ll tell you why I’m happy approaching the last few weeks of my degree. I’ve met friends who I’ll stay in contact with for years, I’ve met my girlfriend, I’ve met my Art Director, I’ve been given the opportunity to learn a craft, I’ve grown up, I’ve lived on my own, I’ve learnt how to cook (but not clean), I’ve been independent, I’ve had to budget, I’ve played university rugby, I’ve got stupidly drunk, I’ve done hundreds of all-nighters, I’ve had lie-ins, I’ve been up north, I’ve made my parents proud, I’ve made myself proud…

The list goes on but you get the point. So 17 years of education, from colouring in to dissertations, comes down to these last couple of weeks and needless to say Ollie and I are going to be working our testes off to get that elusive job in advertising!
  Pete + Olliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00869952071237839448noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3599002802423327341.post-36687655649551316612010-05-03T15:25:00.000-07:002010-05-03T15:31:49.801-07:00These ads give me a hard-on

So far so good. The proposition was that Bella was about “Real life stories, rather than aspirational, celebrity news”. Still good. Bearing in mind we only had an hour, in-depth research wasn’t an option so we were given a short paragraph describing the product:

Its contemporary design and content reflect its true understanding of women today.”

Now if we’re totally honest we’ve never heard of this magazine let alone read it so that paragraph is all we had to go on. We liked the idea that this magazine didn’t focus on “Brangelina” “Cheryl” and “Jordan” week in week out. We were pleasantly surprised that a magazine existed for women that talked about real life issues. Our idea was (and we’re very aware that it’s not the next Cadbury’s Gorilla, but cut us some slack, we did it in about 5 mins) was to say that Bella Magazine represents real life issues so well that it’s what the celebrities use to connect with the real world (as they don’t live in it).

Here’s my problem (sorry it’s taken so long), this magazine isn’t about real life at all! Some of the stories in this magazine are titled “He was 16 but I couldn’t help myself…” “Mum watched TV while I gave birth in secret” and my all time favourite “I like to pleasure myself with my vacuum cleaner”, ok I made that last one up but that’s the sort of BOLLOCKS this magazine prints…every week! There was somewhat of an uproar when the tutors said that the magazine isn’t really about real life stories, it’s more reading about other people’s rubbish lives to make you feel better about your own. 1) That doesn’t say much about women’s self esteem these days and 2) how the bleep are we supposed to know that going by what the paragraph says.

I don’t know about you guys but my parents have no idea about the advertising industry, especially the creative department, and can’t quite get their head around a few things. That’s why I’ve created The Parents Guide to Advertising. (Please feel free to copy, paste and then print this off and give to your parents).

1) The Creative Team – Advertising creatives work in teams of two, a Copywriter and an Art Director. Your son/daughter will be working with someone else for most of his or her career. They need this person to get a job. They work together, they interview together (more later) and they sleep together…ok they don’t but may as well do. Creative teams traditionally spend more time with each other than they do with their respective partners. And at the beginning of their careers they’re going to be working a lot. In fact at the end of their careers they’ll probably be working a lot too.

2) University – Were you, or are you, worried your son/daughter isn’t doing a real degree? Well you shouldn’t be worried, you’re right; it’s not a real degree. There aren’t any exams and hardly any essays. Essentially they’re on a course where the more interesting ideas they have, the better. The work is totally subjective and to be honest the grade your son/daughter receives means absolutely nothing in the advertising world. The reason they’re doing it is to produce their portfolio. This is their key to getting a job; this is what you should nag them to do. Gone are the days of revision, it’s all about re-working your book! (Note – if you have to nag them to do it, then they probably won’t get a job).

3) Interviews – These are known as “book crits” although a book crit isn’t really an interview. Let me explain. For a normal company, a position will become available and people will apply for that position. The company will select people to interview and someone will be hired. Simple. Advertising is a little more complex. There is never a vacancy in the creative department; this business is far too competitive for jobs to be going around. Normally a team will choose an agency/agencies they admire and want to work for and will approach them with their portfolio of work. The people they see will advise them on what they like and don’t like and will arrange for another “interview” some time in the future to see improvements. The team will see many agencies and will start to know which ones feel best for them. Once they’ve been to a few “interviews” they should be offered a placement (only if the work is good enough), which leads me onto point 4.

4) Placements – These are similar to placements in other industries. The difference comes in the time frame and the salary. Placements start around 2 weeks and can go as long as 8 months. Your son/daughter will be paid virtually nothing, relatively speaking. If they’re lucky they’ll get around £250 per week max! They’ll more than likely, however, be paid just for expenses. So they’re going to be working day and night for months for in effect no money (so you’ll have to look after them just that bit longer). How do they go from placement to full-time? Hard work and impressive work. They’ll probably have a few placements before being offered a job. The main objective on placement is to work so hard that they have no choice but to offer you an extension. On average it takes 18 months for a graduate to get a job as a junior creative at an ad agency.

5) Future – Now all this may seem quite negative, so I think I should end on all the positives. When they finally get a job, they’ll be paid handsomely to make adverts that will actually be on TV, and on bus stops etc so you can be a proud parent almost every day. They’ll work in cool offices, surrounded by intelligent and funny people and will be able to get you discount on some products they advertise. They can change the way people think about pretty much anything and they won’t be anywhere near as boring as the accountant you once wanted them to become.

I hope this clarifies a few things for your parents. I’ve yet to show mine. In reality this probably won’t help whatsoever but even if it helps one person explain the struggle of getting a job in advertising to their parents then it was worth it.
  Pete + Olliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00869952071237839448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3599002802423327341.post-79089187927624272862010-03-08T06:45:00.001-08:002010-03-08T07:01:53.449-08:00Book Crits - Round 1

We thought we’d jump in at the deep end and test our book at, let’s face it, one of the best agencies in the World. We got to Paddington station an hour early, spent 20 minutes finding the offices, then had 40 minutes to spare. We didn’t want to be too early so we basically sat on a bench by a bus stop for half an hour absolutely freezing. After nearly catching hypothermia we finally went in and met Andy and Christian. Nerves were gone and our learning caps were on. That’s the one thing I’d say about crits, learn as much as you can, write it all down and most of all – listen. Andy was dealing with some sort of disagreement in the creative department so we listened to Christian. He was brilliant. Honest, constructive, everything you want from a crit. There were some things he liked and others he didn’t, the most important thing was he asked us to come back after we’ve made some changes (another thing to add to the ever growing to-do list).

After DDB, it was a short trip over to see Steve and Matt at AIS. We won an hour with the 2 creative directors on twitter (we were their 1000th follower). Now to be perfectly honest we were shitting ourselves. It’s not often you meet 1 of the owners of an agency AND it’s creative director. They took us for coffee round the corner from the agency and we proceeded to have the most surreal 60 minutes of our professional lives (so far). Ollie and I felt like we were chatting them up – Ollie was speaking to Matt about rugby and I was chatting to Steve about Coventry City FC where my friend played just months ago. After chatting about all sorts of things we got down to business and presented them with our book. Things got even better and we felt liked they took a shining to us, we were getting great feedback on our work and Ollie kicked me under the table as if to say, “can you believe this”. Truth was, I couldn’t. Everything seemed to be like some sort of dream, with everything going our way. Steve and Matt were impressed by us and have invited us back again, so we’ll be working hard to get our book in shape for another round of crits in the next few weeks.

Next we were onto Ogilvy, and their rather plush offices, to see Steve and Serge with some other students from Lincoln. They’d set us the challenge of advertising Toyota (Yeh, they've got a strange sense of humor). Ollie and I thought we’d take a risk and do something we knew nobody else would do. I’d say the risk paid off, we got good feedback but for me it was important that nobody else had the same idea as us. That’s another thing we’ve learnt recently. You’ve got to produce unexpected stuff; the aim is to make people say, “I’d never thought of it like that before.”

So all in all, it was a really successful trip. We’ll be cracking on with D&AD this week then re-doing more work for our book and hopefully back to London for more feedback, it’s quite addictive actually, I'd never thought of it like that before.

However credit must go to the tutors who arranged for Roger Horberry to come in and pass on his copywriting wisdom. Author of “Brilliant Copywriting”, Roger has tons of experience in copywriting, mainly for branding and design.

Words are incredibly powerful, after all that’s how we all communicate. You don’t see people drawing pictures to each other on the street do you?! (Incase you hadn’t realised, I’m a copywriter).

We started the day off focusing on tone of voice. We had to re-write an advert but in the voice of someone famous. I got Danni Minogue. Needless to say, the result was quite entertaining. The exercise taught us the importance of giving our writing a voice. An identifiable tone of voice in the writing of some brands is arguably as important as their logo.

Roger then asked us to take a famous speech and ruin it. How do you do that, I hear you ask. Well a good speech has a message to communicate. You could write that message in one line – not very inspiring. The magic comes in all the small details, the language, the pauses, the delivery, the rhythm of the writing. So we took famous speeches and took all those parts out, which left us with flat, boring bullet points.

Winston Churchill’s famous “We shall fight on the beaches…” speech becomes:

1) We’ll fight everywhere.
2) If worst comes to worst and we starve here, we’ll keep fighting anyway.

We carried out lots of different exercises throughout the day, each with its own little lesson in copywriting. My favourite by far was writing 6 word stories. You may think that’s impossible, a whole story in just 6 words, yet legendary author Ernest Hemingway wrote “For Sale. Baby’s Shoes. Never Worn.” Still think it’s impossible? The emotion captured in those 6 words is just extraordinary. We were told to write 6 words that our 30-year-old self would tell our 20-year-old self. I wrote, “Buy a nice hat. You’ll bald”. Not as amazing as Hemingway's but funny nonetheless, well Roger thought so anyway (he’s bald).

Overall it was a really good day where we could concentrate on words for a change. A big thanks to Roger for coming to Lincoln and letting us play with language.Pete + Olliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00869952071237839448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3599002802423327341.post-39437110060926405162010-02-24T09:37:00.001-08:002010-02-25T13:57:52.885-08:00What Pete gets up to when he's not advertising.... I thought I’d give you a little insight into the experiences of an international rugby player.

Felt so shit after the flight, horrible turbulence and my stomach was churning over. Good news was that my luggage arrived safely (it’s ridiculous that the expectation is the airline will lose it). It was good to see the boys again and the banter started flying around straight away. I thought to myself ‘we’ve got a decent side here!’ Arrived at Hotel Mati – nothing special, but I’ve stayed in a lot worse; at least we’ve got air-con! I’m rooming with Dan Thrasivoulou and Marko Mladanovic (he’s actually Serbian but has Cyprus Citizenship), happy I’m not with Colm again although Marko snores like an earthquake. We had lunch and chilled before our afternoon training session. The training pitch was closed for the afternoon so Coach made us train on a basketball pitch – now this is international rugby! I felt I trained well and it was good to run a few patterns and get the flight out of our legs. We had dinner at the tavern opposite the hotel (mmm Greek food). It was then time for bed, I started to think about the matches we were going to play and got quite nervous – really need to speak to coach about my confidence issues.

Slept well despite Marko’s best efforts. Had training in the morning, thought I did well, was composed and talked a lot. Starting to get nervous that the lads (bar Chris) aren’t picking up the patterns. Wanted to go into Athens and explore this afternoon, as we had the afternoon off, but most of the guys wanted to chill. I put my compression tights on (long story) – they’ve been a godsend so far! Wanted to speak to coach about my weaknesses but he said to wait until Sunday once the job was done. Bedtime.

Game day! As usual, no breakfast for me, forced down a few peach slices but felt sick! We were up against Spain first. The stadium was 30mins inland so there was no breeze, making it fucking hot! I started on the bench, fair play; Dan’s a good little player and deserves to start. I came on for Andreas in the second half. Spain were exceptional and we lost 26 – 7 but we performed much better than we had against them last year! Anyway, back to the important games, Bosnia and Greece. We were to play Bosnia next and again I started on the bench although after just 2mins I was on for Dan to boss the defence about more. Turns out I should have worried about myself more! A chip came over and I was well placed but then came the rush of blood! 99/100 I’d pounce on the ball but this time I tried to kick it and failed (bloody odd shaped balls) – 5 points to Bosnia…fuck! We ended up winning 14 – 10 but we still have so much more to offer, I certainly do! After that we came back to the hotel for food and some downtime. As I learn't from previous tournaments, no sleep for me, makes me feel really groggy. Next game was vs Greece and nerves began to circle in my mind, we’ve been hurt by them before. Coach gave an awesome talk about forgetting the emotion of the occasion, which helped a lot. Kick off loomed and before I knew it the game has kicked off and we’ve already scored! Emotions were flying but we smashed them 31 – 0, with a hat trick from Andreas thanks to my assists’ haha! The game was marred by an incident in which their captain got sent off for stamping on George’s back – what a wanker. I was so happy, I felt like crying. The Greeks were bad losers but we were gracious in victory and could sleep well.

Athens Day 4

A day to remember for the rest of my life! We were in the semi-finals of the European Rugby 7’s against France and we were massive underdogs (obviously). My calf and knee were in serious pain but from previous experience I know that mind over matter makes you feel so much better in the end. We played with tremendous heart and were unfortunate to go into half time 5 – 0 down. The game ended 24 – 0 and according to Coach and the captain, we gave them too much respect…. or, as I suspect, it was because they were bloody full-time professional rugby players for one of the best rugby nations in the world! Anyway, we did ok not to get smashed! Spain were favourites in the other semi-final but were beaten by a doggedly determined Romanian side. That meant we had to play Spain again for 3rd place. We lost, but we gave them a real good go! I came on and made the “tackle of the tournament” which was very satisfying. So overall we came 4th and people were starting to take notice of us. Even better than that, the French coach came over to us and said he thought we were the best team they’d played all tournament.

We'll keep you updated on how he gets on.

Good luck Andreas!

Vote Andreas For VP Activities @ http://www.lincolnsu.com/elections from the 1st March.

Pete + Olliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00869952071237839448noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3599002802423327341.post-23923353100111118912010-02-12T04:22:00.000-08:002010-02-24T10:19:54.846-08:00Alex Taylor Workshop

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be part of a very interesting workshop at Thomas Parker House with our guest lecturer Alex Taylor. I seriously don't know where Mike and Gyles are getting these people, it's a great opportunity. I mean this week we've had Rory Sutherland AND Alex Taylor! What ever you're doing lads keep 'em coming.

Alex Taylor has achieved so much in her career and it was a great chance to have an insight to what it takes to be the best. She showed us interviews from all the top dogs in the industry and they expressed what it takes to be a great art director. If I had to sum up what they had to say, it would be to work damn hard, learn all there is to know, and then learn some more. It's not going to be easy, and she expressed this explicitly. But you could just see it in her eyes how good her job really is. It has been something I have been searching for in my life, a job that will make me want to get up in the morning. A job that will bring me satisfaction and what's more satisfying than a mate talking about your ad in a pub and turning round to say, "I did that". Alex explained that that was one of the best feelings you got from advertising, and I'm determined to be able to say those three words one day with pride. Ooooo, I want it now!!

I learnt an awful lot yesterday and hopefully will keep it with me for my whole career. After all, I have her 8 secret rules to become the best art director, but I'm afraid I'm not allowed to share it with you guys.

Sorry.

Ollie.

Pete + Olliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00869952071237839448noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3599002802423327341.post-71699236264917975412010-02-09T18:31:00.000-08:002010-02-22T03:08:23.710-08:0024 Hour Ad Challenge

Got to M&C Saatchi. Used toilet. Met film team. Got briefed. Got nervous. Got enthusiastic. Met creative mentor. Impressed him with ideas. Got his contact info. Rampaged through London looking for actors. Found out Release Forms are annoying. Filmed idea. Met account director from Leo Burnett. Exchanged numbers. Had a Redbull. Uploaded film. Had a sandwich. Edited film. Panicked. Spent 4 hours getting edited film onto tape. Happy with what we produced. Didn't have time for sleep. Handed final tape in. Had McDonalds breakfast. Watched all films at ICA. Impressed by some. Not so impressed by others. Waited for judges to...judge. Didn't win. Surprised by winner. Learned a lot. Absolutely shattered. Slept.
